About Us

A Message from our Principal

Dear Union Families,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome the students, families, and community of Union Elementary School, proud home of the Union Cougars!

I am honored and privileged to serve as the Principal of Union Elementary.  I'm entering my nineteenth year in public education and my sixth year in the Union Elementary School District.  I look forward to continued opportunities to build relationships among our Union Community, observing quality instruction, interacting with students daily to support their learning and happiness at our school, and building many opportunities for leadership and pride in what we do.

Our Staff at Union Elementary are committed to meeting the individual needs of all students. Our endeavor is to engage all students every day in every way, maximize our instructional focus, and set high expectations for all students. We are committed to the implementation of effective, differentiated instructional strategies that will impact our students the most.  We will work continuously to provide you with feedback on what your child is doing well, areas to work on, and how you can support your child at home.  "Together, we will succeed!"

I believe in a true open door policy so if you ever have any questions, ideas, or concerns I encourage you to come and talk to me about them. Also, feel free to email me mwelsh@uesd.org or call 623-215-7930.  Working together we can make Union Elementary a wonderful place for our students, parents, staff, and community.

Sincerely,

Michael Welsh

Dear Cougar Parents and Families,

You may have heard the roar about Union Elementary’s school-wide initiative – Cougar Code

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a program supported by the Arizona Department of Education to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. At Union we call it Cougar Code Behavior, a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social, behavior and educational goals. We know that when exemplary behavior and stellar teaching come together, students will reach their maximum potential. The staff at Union Elementary are proud to be leading this initiative at our school.

As part of the Cougar Code program, we have established several clear expectations for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school. We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with positive praise and Cougar Code Tickets. During the first week of school students will tour the school learning all expectations and filling out their Cougar Code Passport. The expectations for all student behavior are clear throughout our campus, including areas such as: the playground, cafeteria, and classrooms. You will be able to ask your child, “What are the expectations in your school?” “How do you follow those expectations?” “What happens when a teacher or staff member sees you following the expectations?” Throughout the year, students will be rewarded for making positive choices through the continued use of our Cougar Code Tickets.

Our school expectations are also designed to prevent bullying behaviors while providing for a safe school environment; thus, allowing more time for instruction. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all kids. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching it to kids in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, front office staff and our paraprofessionals. All staff will be able to encourage students to follow the Cougar Code and make PAWSitive choices.  Please see the updated Cougar Code on the back of this letter.

We believe that by guiding students to make positive behavior choices, creates a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.

Thank you for your support!
